Why Do You Need a Backyard Shed?

The first thing to ask yourself is how you plan to utilize the backyard storage shed. Storage sheds can provide a much-needed facelift to your outdoor space by decluttering and offering a safe and secure area for storage or even relaxation. Whatever you store inside a backyard shed will stay protected from wind, rain, snow, and UV rays that can damage belongings. There are a variety of ways to seamlessly blend an outdoor storage shed onto your property.

Popular Ways to Utilize an Outdoor Storage Shed

  • Potting shed: Whether you are an avid or novice gardener, storage sheds can also turn into a versatile potting shed. A potting shed is an area to keep your gardening equipment and tools while also providing a space to relax or prepare seedlings if needed.
  • Seasonal storage: From pool toys to holiday decorations, a backyard shed is the perfect place to tuck away seasonal items to avoid cluttering your garage or closets in your home.
  • Man cave or She shed: If you simply need a quiet space to escape to yourself or work on a hobby, steel storage sheds can be insulated and transformed into your very own hang out spot.

What Size Outdoor Storage Shed Do You Need?

While knowing exactly what you will be keeping inside your backyard shed will help to give you an idea of what size shelter you need, it is also important to weigh that with the size of your yard. If you have a small yard, it is important to look for a compact shed, and perhaps even a lean-to shed to conserve space.

What Size is Your Backyard?

For small yards, a compact 8’ x 8’ backyard storage shed can be just enough space to store your items without dominating your outdoor space. If you have a large yard and need backyard storage for riding mowers and a lot of gear, then a large 14’ x 14’ outdoor storage shed that has a garage opening would be more convenient for you.

If you have a narrow property, you can still get a spacious backyard shed by changing your plans. Instead of a free-standing structure, consider a lean-to shed. This elongated backyard storage shed attaches to the side of your house or sits up against a fence. Lean-to sheds can also lean against another existing shed or structure. Also, they aren’t just great space savers, but they can be accessed by a backdoor.

How Much Usable Space Do You Have for Backyard Storage?

When you have wide-open spaces on your property, a large outdoor storage shed is an excellent place to keep your outdoor yard equipment in a convenient spot. The key is to have a large even area on which you can place a foundation and the shed.

Although you may have a large area, you should always make sure there is enough clearance between your backyard shed and other buildings. You should never place an outdoor storage shed in an area with poor drainage.

Treat It Like an Important Investment

Storage sheds are valuable investments that can be used for years and boost the convenience and curb appeal of your property. If you plan to sell your property later, the presence of an outdoor storage shed is a positive factor.

It’s also a good idea to purchase a backyard shed that is slightly larger than your current needs. You will be able to grow into it and save money if you figure out later that you need a bigger shed and need an upgrade. Taking proper care of your backyard storage structure will not only elongate the life of your shed, but it will also better protect the items you keep inside.

Will You Need to Pay for Backyard Shed Assembly?

If you plan on installing a small outdoor storage on your property, you can most likely find a friend and follow our easy DIY installation videos. However, if you have any doubt about doing the job correctly, then you should hire a professional. Professional assembly will cost more initially but can save you time if you’re a novice that lacks the tools, know-how, and safety equipment.

Does your shed need a floor?

If your backyard storage shed is used to just store seasonal tools, then it doesn't need a fancy floor. However, a she shed or man cave should have a proper floor, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. Interlocking laminate floors can mimic many high-end materials but at the fraction of the cost. Get a quote for installing this flooring type before you begin your project.

I never thought about having the shed match the look of the outside of my home. That would allow for everything to have flow and look connected. I would like to get a shed to store all of my yard tools so that they are easier to get to then just being in the garage. This information will help lead me in the right direction.
